Sampling of substances containing methyl
Precise and safe sampling in specialty chemicals.
Methyl-containing substances are used in a variety of applications and industries. Methyl groups (CH3-) are a common functional group in organic molecules. In chemical synthesis, methyl groups are used to produce compounds with specific properties.
The introduction of methyl groups can influence the solubility, stability and other chemical properties of a molecule. Some plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, contain methyl groups in their structure. Varying the number of methyl groups can affect the physical properties of plastics, including their density, melting point and flexibility. Most methyl groups alone do not tend to cure under normal conditions. Certain methyl-based polymers such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), better known by brand names such as Plexiglas or acrylic glass, solidify through a curing reaction.
The INTEC K740-K-S-STD sampling device ball valve is used for the controlled removal of methyl methacrylate-based polymers in the process:
- nominal size DN50 and pressure rating PN16
- swivel flushing connection
- heating jacket
- special protective box incl. gradient
- drain connection
The process runs at an operating pressure of 2 to 4 bar and a temperature between 70 and 80°C. To prevent the medium from hardening, the temperature is kept above 40°C by using a heat transfer medium via the heating jacket with DN15 connection flanges.
In accordance with customer requirements, the ball was provided with a blind hole for a defined sampling volume of 62.5 ml per switching cycle. The sampling chamber inside the protective box is cleaned with either steam or nitrogen via the swivel-mounted rinsing connection. The INTEC K740 sampling device ball valve is equipped with spherical caps to prevent the product from accumulating in the dead space. This design makes this valve extremely low in dead space.
In the specialty chemicals industry, precise knowledge of the composition of chemical products is of crucial importance. This special sampling device ball valve enables controlled, representative and as well an absolutely safe sampling for process monitoring, analysis and quality control purposes.
